DStv increases subscription price in Nigeria, South Africa amid rising operational costs

On Monday, DStv announced its new pricing structure for 2025, reflecting changes in both South Africa and Nigeria. The price adjustments aim to maintain the quality of content and services amidst rising operational costs.

Price adjustments in South Africa

DStv’s price hikes in South Africa will take effect from April 1, 2025. The Premium package will increase by R50 to R979 for decoder subscriptions and R799 for streaming, while the Compact Plus and Compact packages will increase to R659 and R479, respectively. The biggest jump is in the Showmax Premier League streaming package, which rises by R30 to R99 per month. However, several streaming services, including the standard DStv Stream and Showmax, will not be increased.

MultiChoice SA CEO Byron Du Plessis noted, “We have considered the current financial strain on households, with the group looking to add value and savings where it could.” Additionally, due to the upcoming VAT increase to 15.5 per cent from May 1, 2025, prices will be adjusted again to reflect this change.

Price adjustments in Nigeria

In Nigeria, the price hike took effect on March 1, 2025. The DStv Compact bouquet increased from N15,700 to N19,000, the Compact Plus rose to N30,000, and the Premium subscription jumped to N44,500. MultiChoice attributed these increases to rising operational costs due to currency depreciation and high inflation.

The company stated, “This is to enable us to continue to offer our customers world-class homegrown and international content delivered through the best technology.” However, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission ordered MultiChoice to suspend the planned price hike, which is pending further investigation.

The status of these price changes remains uncertain in Nigeria, while customers in South Africa are preparing for the upcoming adjustments. MultiChoice continues to emphasise its commitment to delivering quality content despite these challenges.
