In filings on Tuesday and Wednesday, the companies stated that they had reached settlement agreements “in principle” in five cases.
Among these are lawsuits filed by the relatives of Juliana Peralta, 13, and Sewell Setzer III, 14, who both killed themselves following protracted chats with Character.AI’s chatbots.
The three other families have accused the chatbots of exposing their kids to sexual abuse and pushing them to self-harm.
Additionally, the complaints claimed that Google was “instrumental” in the creation of Character.AI’s products, noting that the company’s founders began their work there before signing a $2.7 billion contract with the tech behemoth.
Both “Character.AI” and Google declined to comment.
Rising concerns about effects of AI chatbots on children
Concerns about the effects of AI chatbots on children are on the rise, as evidenced by lawsuits. Last year, several parents, including Megan Garcia, Setzer’s mother, testified before Congress and urged lawmakers to enact safeguards.
The issue is not specific to Character.AI. Additionally, OpenAI is being sued over the death of 16-year-old Adam Raine, whose parents claim ChatGPT coached him into ending his own life.
In response to the criticism, chatbot companies have implemented new safeguards. OpenAI has revealed plans to develop age-prediction technology and new parental controls in recent months in an attempt to provide younger users with a more personalised experience.
In addition, Character.AI announced plans to create a distinct “under-18 experience” and prohibited minors under 18 from having “open-ended” conversations with its chatbots in late November.
