Instagram announced the launch of a new video editing app called Edits on Monday. This initiative, led by Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, aims to provide creators with powerful editing tools and analytics.

The app is designed to help content creators produce high-quality videos and compete with popular platforms like TikTok and CapCut.

Features designed for creators

Edits is designed to be more than just an essential editing tool. Mosseri emphasised that “there’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators.”

The app will be available for preorder on the iOS App Store and will launch on March 13, 2025.

One of Edits’ standout features is its Inspiration Tab, which provides users with creative ideas and prompts. Additionally, the app includes an Idea Tracker that helps creators organize their concepts effectively.

The enhanced camera functionality allows for high-quality video capture, making it suitable for professional-grade content. Advanced editing options such as green screens and video overlays are also included, catering to the diverse needs of content creators.

Moreover, Edits integrates seamlessly with Instagram, offering creators detailed insights into their video performance. This includes a live performance dashboard that tracks engagement metrics, differentiating interactions between followers and non-followers. These analytics will help creators refine their content strategies based on viewer behaviour.

The context of the launch

The announcement comes as TikTok and CapCut have faced outages in the U.S., raising concerns about their reliability. This situation has allowed Instagram to step in and provide a robust alternative for creators seeking reliable editing tools.

Mosseri noted in his announcement that Edits is not merely about competing but enhancing the overall experience for creators on Instagram.

In light of recent events surrounding TikTok’s uncertain future in the U.S., including legislative challenges and service interruptions, Instagram appears poised to capture a segment of the creator market looking for dependable platforms.

Moseseri’s idea for Edits complements Meta’s ambition to strengthen its content creation community and provide creators with innovative storytelling tools.
