With funding from Finnfund and in collaboration with Communication & Renewable Energy Infrastructure (CREI), the solarisation programme is helping MTN South Sudan accelerate the countrywide shift to cleaner, more reliable power sources.

“As MTN, we believe everyone deserves the benefits of a modern, connected life. This initiative ensures that connectivity reaches every community, including those without access to grid power,” said Ms Mapula Bodibe, CEO of MTN South Sudan.

MTN upgraded over 500 sites using solar-hybrid energy

To date, MTN has updated more than 500 sites using solar-hybrid energy technology. The network’s overall power supply stability has been greatly improved by this investment, providing more dependable voice and data services to over four million customers, or roughly 84% of the population. With the increased service uptime, MTN is furthering its goal of expanding financial and digital inclusion across the country.

“As part of our commitment to Project Zero, MTN South Sudan has successfully reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 43 per cent with further gains underway. This milestone is a critical step toward MTN Group’s broader ambition of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

By modernising our Energy infrastructure with sustainable power solutions, we are demonstrating that environmental stewardship and network performance go hand in hand. “As the best mobile operator in South Sudan, we recognise our responsibility to lead the transition toward a low-carbon economy,” said Mr Brian Karuhanga, Chief Technology Officer, MTN South Sudan.

He added, “Our efforts remain firmly aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on clean energy, innovation and cross-sector collaboration to address the global climate crisis. We believe that through innovation and collective action, we can build a more resilient and sustainable future for our stakeholders and the planet.”

Significance of solar-hybrid energy to MTN South Sudan

MTN South Sudan’s contribution to national development is still largely made possible by reliable energy. MTN is enhancing nationwide connectivity for mobile financial services, healthcare, education, and business by switching to clean and reliable electricity.

This achievement shows MTN South Sudan’s ongoing commitment to reliable, strong, and environmentally conscious connectivity, supporting national priorities and MTN Group’s long-term sustainability goals.
