Interns will collaborate with researchers, technologists, archivists, and media professionals on projects involving machine learning, digital archives, and newsroom innovation. The programme will be divided into two phases.

The first phase, running from October 2026 to January 2027, will focus on AI-powered newsroom tools and archival systems. Interns will support projects that improve access to NPR’s historical media collections and help transform archived content into searchable digital resources.

The second phase, from January to April 2027, will centre on ethics and governance. Participants will contribute to research exploring how AI systems can operate alongside human editorial oversight in journalism and media production.

Focus on AI, Data and Ethical Journalism

NPR said selected interns will gain experience building AI prototypes, organising datasets for machine learning projects, analysing archival content, and evaluating AI systems for fairness and accuracy.

The organisation added that interns will also support metadata management, archival preservation, and documentation for responsible AI use in newsroom environments.

Applicants with academic or professional backgrounds in artificial intelligence, machine learning, journalism, information science, computer science, digital humanities, and archive studies are encouraged to apply.

NPR is also seeking candidates with strong analytical and communication skills who can work effectively in remote and collaborative settings. Familiarity with GitHub, machine learning frameworks, and AI technologies will be considered an advantage.

Pay, Eligibility and Deadline

The internship offers pay of 20 US dollars per hour, along with flexible remote work arrangements and professional development opportunities. Interns may also access employee wellness support, paid leave benefits, and networking opportunities with industry experts.

To qualify, applicants must either be currently enrolled in an accredited academic programme or have graduated within the 12 months preceding the internship.

Candidates must also be legally authorised to work in the United States throughout the programme period.

Applications close on 14 June 2026 at 11:59 pm Eastern Time. Interested applicants are expected to submit a resume and cover letter. NPR also encourages candidates to provide a portfolio, personal website, or GitHub profile where available.

The internship reflects growing demand for professionals who can combine technical AI knowledge with ethical decision-making in modern journalism.
