Globally, at least 90,474 workers at tech companies have been let go so far in 2026, roughly 973 people every single day. That pace is running ahead of 2025, and if it holds, the year could end worse than any on record.
The companies cutting are not struggling ones. Oracle sent termination emails to thousands of workers on March 31st, with estimates putting the total job cuts at up to 30,000, the biggest single tech layoff since 2025.

Meta has already cut about 1,500 jobs from its Reality Labs division and is reportedly planning further reductions that could affect up to 15,000 more workers, roughly 20 per cent of its workforce, while spending up to $135 billion on AI infrastructure in 2026, nearly double its 2025 outlay.
Block slashed 4,000 roles in early 2026, nearly 40 per cent of its entire workforce. Atlassian cut 1,600 jobs, Salesforce trimmed 1,500, ASML let go of 1,700, WiseTech Global reduced its headcount by 2,000, and Epic Games parted ways with over 1,000 employees.
CEO Jack Dorsey was unusually direct on the Block cuts: “This is not driven by financial difficulty, but by the growing capability of AI tools to perform a wider range of tasks.”
That framing, AI as cause, not cover, is where analysts are drawing the line. Many experts argue the “AI made us do it” storyline is often AI-washing: a convenient narrative masking a more complex mix of cost-cutting, post-pandemic restructuring, and the need to fund massive AI infrastructure investments.
Since the launch of ChatGPT, AI-related stocks have accounted for about 75 per cent of S&P 500 returns, and a workforce reduction framed around AI adoption sends a signal to investors that a straightforward cost-cutting announcement does not.
Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer at outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, put it plainly: “Companies are shifting budgets toward AI investments at the expense of jobs. The actual replacement of roles can be seen in technology companies, where AI can replace coding functions.”
Data from research firm RationalFX found that about one in five of the 45,363 tech layoffs recorded globally in 2026 are directly tied to AI adoption and organisational restructuring.
The other four point to older pressures, over-hiring during the pandemic boom, margin demands from investors, and post-correction rightsizing. But the destination is the same regardless of the stated reason: companies are laying off staff and insisting AI will “do more with less,” even as most haven’t found ways to deploy it at scale.
The ripple effects reached African fintech and crypto startups as well, with several racing to streamline operations to enable AI, automation, and long-term profitability in Q1 2026.
Zap Africa slashed its team by 44 per cent in February. Quidax cut across marketing, sales, and operations as it shifted to a B2B model. The global wave and the local one share the same logic: do more with fewer people and call it progress.
What the layoffs have also produced, however, is a pool of experienced engineers, analysts, and product leaders open to remote work and, for Africa, that can become mentorship capacity, contract expertise, and real-world project support, if the right pathways exist.
The tech industry’s story for 2026 is revenue growth without headcount growth. For African tech builders and workers, the question is whether that gap becomes an opening or just more pressure arriving from a different direction.
