According to official guidelines, applicants must show “leadership qualities and a commitment to community service” alongside strong academic performance.

The broader Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program aims to build a network of young leaders who can drive inclusive growth across Africa. The foundation states it seeks to “develop the next generation of transformative leaders” through access to higher education and leadership training.

At the University of Pretoria, the programme has been active since 2014, supporting high-achieving students across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Fully Funded Support Package

Selected scholars receive comprehensive financial and academic support. This includes tuition, accommodation, learning materials, mentoring, and leadership development opportunities.

The scholarship is structured to ensure students not only complete their degrees but also transition into meaningful careers. Scholars are also expected to contribute to their communities after graduation, reinforcing the programme’s focus on social impact.

Globally, the initiative has already supported tens of thousands of students, with a long-term goal of expanding access to higher education for young Africans.

Application Process and Deadlines

Prospective applicants must first secure admission into an eligible programme at the University of Pretoria before applying for the scholarship.

Applications for the scholarship itself are open until June 30, 2026, while university admission deadlines extend later into the year depending on the programme.

Candidates are required to submit academic records, demonstrate English proficiency where necessary, and provide evidence of leadership and service.

A Pathway to Leadership

Beyond funding, the programme places strong emphasis on personal development, mentorship, and community engagement. Its goal is to equip scholars with the skills and networks needed to influence change across Africa.

As the foundation notes, the initiative is “more than a scholarship programme. It is a community, bringing together students, alumni, and institutions committed to long-term impact.

With applications now open, the 2027 cohort offers another chance for driven African students to access world-class education while preparing to lead change in their communities.
