Through the Ministry of Energy, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed, laying the groundwork for a 100-megawatt pilot solar plant in Itezhi-Tezhi District, with construction expected to begin in April 2026. Each solar project under the partnership framework is expected to be completed within 8 to 10 months, and additional plants are planned for other regions of the country.

Engineer Arnold Simwaba, the Ministry of Energy’s Permanent Secretary for Electricity, signed the agreement on behalf of the government, while James Jin, President of LONGi Solar MENA, signed on behalf of the participating companies.

Call to action

The government has urged partners to move swiftly from agreement to implementation, noting that timely delivery will be key to strengthening the national power supply. Authorities have also committed to providing the necessary institutional support to ensure the smooth execution of the projects.

The partnership builds on discussions initiated during President Hakainde Hichilema’s 2025 state visit to China, which enabled closer collaboration with Chinese companies in strategic areas, including renewable energy.

Partners to roll out 1,000 megawatts of solar capacity

LONGi has welcomed Zambia’s readiness to support large-scale solar deployment, with Mr Jin confirming that the partners aim to roll out up to 1,000 megawatts of solar capacity over time. He also noted that Zambia imported around 500 MW worth of solar panels from China in 2025, with a significant share supplied by LONGi.

Increasing investment in solar energy is essential to Zambia’s industrial and digital ecosystem. An expanded, reliable electricity supply will support technology-driven businesses, digital infrastructure, and climate-resilient growth as the country continues its transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
