OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is mulling the introduction of advertisements for its AI products and offerings. This potential shift was announced on Monday during an interview with CFO Sarah Friar.

She emphasised the company’s commitment to being “thoughtful about when and where we implement them” as it explores this new revenue stream.

Exploring new revenue streams

Despite OpenAI’s current business model thriving, with projected revenues of $3.7 billion for 2024, the company faces high operational costs estimated to exceed $5 billion annually. To address this financial pressure, OpenAI is considering ads to diversify its income sources.

The company has been actively hiring advertising experts from major firms like Google and Meta to prepare for this possible transition. Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, has a strong background in developing ad-supported platforms, which could help guide this initiative.

However, the introduction of ads is not without internal debate. CEO Sam Altman views advertising as a “last resort,” expressing concerns that it might shift focus from users to advertisers and expose the company to economic fluctuations.

Friar agreed and said that there aren’t any concrete plans for an immediate ad rollout, even as rumours swirled about the possibility.

Balancing user experience and monetisation

The potential integration of ads raises questions about user experience. Experts warn that ads must be distinguishable from genuine content to maintain trust and engagement.

OpenAI aims to learn from the successes and pitfalls of established advertising models used by tech giants like Google and Meta, which have managed to blend ads seamlessly into their platforms without alienating users.

While pursuing additional revenue-generating opportunities, OpenAI stays committed to its primary innovation purpose as it traverses this challenging environment.

Despite the push to become a more conventional for-profit firm, the company’s cautious stance shows that it wants to maintain its reputation for user-centric AI technology.

While considering adding ads to its AI solutions, OpenAI remains careful. These debates could influence how users interact with AI technologies like ChatGPT and lay the groundwork for AI monetisation.
