The 12-month programme, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, is part of the company’s International Cybersecurity Early Careers Programme. This initiative gives entry-level candidates hands-on experience and structured training in information security and cyber operations.

Focus on Practical Cybersecurity Skills

The programme organisers have shared that selected learners will rotate across multiple cybersecurity functions during the year-long placement. Participants will work alongside experienced professionals while learning how corporate cybersecurity teams monitor and respond to threats.

The training includes exposure to cybersecurity operations, threat intelligence, digital forensics, and cyber risk management. Learners will also receive preparation support for the globally recognised CompTIA Security+ certification, a qualification widely used in the cybersecurity industry.

Anglo American said the programme combines theoretical learning with workplace experience to help participants understand how large organisations manage digital security challenges.

Eligibility Requirements for Applicants

The learnership is open to applicants aged 18 years and above who have completed Grade 12 with mathematics and science. Candidates must also demonstrate an interest in cybersecurity or information security-related careers.

The company stated that applicants should possess analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to learn emerging technologies quickly. Strong English language proficiency is also listed among the requirements.

The programme reflects growing demand for cybersecurity professionals across industries as companies strengthen digital protection systems against cybercrime and data breaches.

Exposure to Global Security Operations

Participants will gain insight into how international cybersecurity teams coordinate responses to online threats and investigate incidents. The programme also introduces learners to digital evidence handling and forensic investigation processes used in corporate environments.

Cybersecurity experts have repeatedly warned that organisations across Africa face increasing risks linked to ransomware attacks, phishing campaigns, and digital fraud. Governments and private firms have responded by increasing investment in cybersecurity training and workforce development.

Industry observers say programmes such as this could help address skills shortages affecting cybersecurity sectors across Africa and beyond.

Anglo American Expands Digital Innovation Efforts

Anglo American said the learnership aligns with its broader digital transformation and innovation strategy within the mining sector. The company operates across several commodities, including copper, diamonds, platinum, iron ore, coal, and nickel.

Successful learners will gain experience in a multinational work environment while building the foundations for careers in cybersecurity, digital risk management, and information security operations.

Applications for the cybersecurity learnership are currently open through the company’s recruitment platform.
