At Google I/O 2026, Google announced that the Gemini app is getting a series of new updates, including a “Daily Brief” feature, a redesigned interface, access to a new AI video model, and a new personal AI agent called Gemini Spark. Taken together, the upgrades position Gemini not as a chatbot, but as a full-scale AI platform built to compete more aggressively with OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
Google rebuilds Gemini from scratch to take on rival AI platforms
Google said it rebuilt the Gemini app from the ground up. When users open the app, they see a new design language called “Neural Expressive,” which brings fluid animations, vibrant colors, new typography, and haptic feedback. The redesign gives Gemini a more visually expressive interface than many rival AI apps currently offer on mobile and web.
Gemini’s responses are no longer presented as a wall of text, which remains common across many AI chatbots. Instead, key information appears in bold at the top. That structural shift makes Gemini faster to read and easier to act on, offering a practical usability advantage for everyday users.
The Gemini app is available in over 230 countries and in more than 70 languages. That global reach gives Google a distribution advantage that rivals are still working to close, and the rebuilt app is designed to deepen engagement across those markets.
Google signals the next era of AI with Gemini Spark and Daily Brief
Gemini Spark is described as “your personal agent” that takes actions on your behalf to help “navigate your digital life.” Google states that “Spark represents a big shift for Gemini, transforming it from an assistant that can answer your questions into an active partner that does real work on your behalf and under your direction.”
Running on dedicated Google Cloud virtual machines, Spark works 24/7 and can be accessed on any device via the Gemini app. It will soon be accessible via emailing and texting, as well as through Chrome. That always-on capability pushes Gemini further into the emerging AI agent category that major AI companies are now racing to dominate.
Google also introduced Daily Brief, a proactive morning summary inside the Gemini app. The feature collects updates from connected Google services like Gmail and Calendar and presents them in a single organised briefing. According to Google, Daily Brief can identify urgent emails, upcoming meetings, reminders, and follow-up details while also suggesting next actions based on a user’s priorities.
The new AI Ultra plan costs $100 per month and provides up to five times higher usage limits than the Pro plan, along with 20TB of storage, a YouTube Premium Individual subscription, $40 in monthly Google Cloud credits, and 10,000 Flow Credits for AI-powered creative tools. That package places Gemini Ultra in more direct competition with premium offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.
By expanding Gemini’s multimodal capabilities across text, images, audio, and video inside a single rebuilt app, Google is intensifying competition in the race to lead the next generation of AI platforms. More importantly, the company is leveraging its wider ecosystem, including Search, Gmail, Chrome, Android, and Workspace to position Gemini as a deeply integrated AI layer across products billions of people already use daily.
