Africa’s automobile market, dominated by used imports, is changing with this debut. Chery expects customers wanting lower running costs and advanced safety to choose modern, efficient, and tech-savvy vehicles. Starting at KES 3.9 million (approximately $30,200), the new Tiggo models come with one of Kenya’s most extensive seven-year or 200,000 km warranties.

Electric and hybrid SUVs tailored for Kenya

Chery’s inaugural product line comprises the Tiggo 4 Pro, Tiggo 7 Pro, and Tiggo 8 Pro Max, tailored to the needs of urban commuters in Kenya who demand both connectivity and performance.

Aurélien Glay, Managing Director of Caetano Kenya, Chery’s local partner, highlights that the launch is more than just car sales: “Our plan includes local vehicle assembly starting in 2026, which supports the ‘Buy Kenya, Build Kenya’ policy by creating jobs and transferring manufacturing skills.” This strategy could reduce costs further and foster industrial growth right in Kenya.

Transforming Kenya’s vehicle market dynamics

The Kenyan vehicle market is expanding at an annual rate of 3.21%, with an estimated value of $1.5 billion by 2030, driven by rising second-hand car imports.

This conventional approach is challenged by Chery’s entry, which promotes the affordability of new electric and hybrid SUVs with reduced operating expenses.

The multinational automaker anticipates that this initiative will resonate with a technologically adept generation seeking innovative, dependable automobiles.

Jay Jay Botes, the General Manager of Chery South Africa, observes, “Advancing hybrid technology means harnessing innovation and new energy to drive sustainable growth.” Chery’s Super Hybrid technology promises fuel consumption as low as 2–3l/100km, boosting efficiency and cutting emissions.

Chery’s introduction in Kenya reflects Africa’s shift towards cleaner, smarter vehicles and local manufacturing priorities. This is a smart move to revolutionise Kenyan roadways with affordable electric and hybrid SUVs.
