Egypt to Host 2026 Edition
The 2026 edition will take place in Egypt under the leadership of the country’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. Organisers selected Egypt because of its expanding digital economy, growing AI ecosystem, and investment in emerging technologies.
The competition follows earlier editions that attracted innovators from all 55 African Union member states. The 2025 showcase in South Africa was linked to the G20 AI in Africa conference, helping elevate the profile of African-built technology solutions on the global stage.
Focus on Youth-Led Innovation
The initiative targets young Africans working in artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and related technologies. Beyond the contest itself, organisers describe the programme as a broader development platform that encourages entrepreneurship, technical skills, and digital industrial growth.
Participants are expected to present solutions addressing challenges in sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, manufacturing, and public services. The programme also aligns with the African Union’s Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa and the wider Agenda 2063 development framework.
Officials behind the initiative say the competition reflects growing recognition that Africa’s youth population can play a larger role in shaping the continent’s digital future.
Participation Numbers Continue to Rise
Interest in the competition has increased sharply over the past two years. According to organisers, the platform recorded more than 1,000 submissions in 2024, rising to over 3,200 in 2025.
The rising participation numbers point to stronger engagement with AI and robotics among young Africans, especially as more universities, startups, and innovation hubs invest in research and training in emerging technologies.
Technology experts across the continent have repeatedly called for stronger support systems for young innovators, including access to funding, mentorship, and policy backing. The competition aims to help bridge some of those gaps by creating visibility and networking opportunities for participants.
