The initiative aims to back innovators building safer, cleaner and more transparent mining systems across the continent, while helping entrepreneurs connect with investors, mentors and industry experts.
Driving Innovation Across Africa’s Mining Sector
The MineTech Hub forms part of the UNDP’s timbuktoo Africa Initiative and will identify promising startups tackling long-standing challenges within Africa’s mining industry. The programme seeks solutions that improve safety for artisanal miners, strengthen mineral traceability, monitor environmental impacts and expand the benefits mining brings to surrounding communities.
Mining remains a major contributor to many African economies, yet the sector continues to face unsafe working conditions, limited oversight of environmental damage and supply chains that often lack transparency. Through the MineTech Hub, UNDP believes African entrepreneurs can develop practical technologies that respond to these challenges while creating lasting economic opportunities.
Incubation, Mentorship and Investment Support
Successful applicants will receive structured incubation through accredited incubators within the timbuktoo network. Participants will also gain access to experienced mentors, investors and fellow founders across Africa through the timbuktoo digital platform.
The online platform provides learning resources, personalised mentorship matching and artificial intelligence-powered guidance to help founders strengthen their businesses as they prepare to attract investment.
According to UNDP, the programme seeks to help startups move from early-stage innovation to sustainable growth with support from a continent-wide network.
Wide Range of Mining Solutions Welcome
Applications are open to startups working across the mining value chain. Areas of interest include mine safety technology, workforce protection, artisanal and small-scale mining formalisation and mechanisation, mineral traceability, resource governance, environmental monitoring, climate resilience, lithium-ion battery development, remote mining operations, mine dewatering, ventilation, geotechnical risk management, market access and financial inclusion for mining-related businesses.
To qualify, startups must be based in Africa or developing solutions for African mining markets. Applicants must also have a working prototype or minimum viable product, a committed team, and a solution that addresses a genuine challenge within the mining sector.
UNDP is particularly encouraging applications from women-led and youth-led startups, as well as founders working in underserved communities and mining-affected regions.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, with new cohorts admitted every three months. The first cohort is scheduled to begin in July 2026. Interested startups can submit their applications through the official timbuktoo MineTech Hub application portal.
The initiative forms part of UNDP’s wider effort to strengthen Africa’s innovation ecosystem by supporting entrepreneurs with the tools, networks and funding readiness needed to build solutions that deliver lasting value across the continent.
