The initiative is gaining attention across the continent as more founders seek structured support to move from the idea stage to investment readiness.
Antler operates in more than 30 cities worldwide and runs founder residencies that help entrepreneurs build startups from scratch, validate ideas, and connect with investors. The programme is open to solo founders and early-stage teams, with many African entrepreneurs joining through the firm’s East Africa and Middle East cohorts.
Focus on Co-Founder Matching
One of the strongest attractions of the residency is its co-founder matching process. Participants join a curated group of entrepreneurs, engineers, operators, and business professionals working full time during the residency.
According to Antler, founders are encouraged to test working relationships, exchange ideas, and form start-up teams during the programme. The company says many successful startups backed through its network began with strangers meeting inside the residency.
Several founders who shared their experiences online described the residency as intense but useful for networking and team building. One participant on Reddit said the biggest value came from working closely with potential co-founders under pressure, which helped reveal compatibility faster than online networking platforms.
Investment Opportunities for Early-Stage Startups
Antler positions itself as a “day zero” investor, meaning it backs founders before they fully establish a company. Depending on the location, startups selected after the residency may receive investments ranging from $100,000 to $500,000.
The East Africa residency in Nairobi, for example, offers selected teams up to $100,000 in exchange for equity, alongside follow-on funding opportunities. Participants also receive mentorship, workshops, office support, and investor introductions during the programme.
Antler says its goal is to help founders compress months of startup development into a shorter period through intensive collaboration and structured guidance.
African Founders Join Global Network
The residency is attracting growing interest from African startup founders seeking access to international investors and startup ecosystems. Antler’s network includes more than 1,500 portfolio companies across sectors such as fintech, health technology, artificial intelligence, logistics, and climate technology.
Applications for many Antler cohorts remain open on a rolling basis, with residencies taking place in cities including Nairobi, Dubai, London, Berlin, Singapore, and New York. Founders are usually expected to commit full time and attend the residency in person.
