With advanced transportation solutions, Benin is boldly addressing traffic congestion. This project optimises traffic management, road safety, and sustainable transportation.

On March 10, 2025, Ecofin Agency interviewed Ranti Akindès, the Director General of the Road Infrastructure and Territorial Development Company (SIRAT), who provided this information.

It was declared that the country would use connected gadgets, sensors, cameras, real-time data, and AI to improve traffic flow.

Benin implements digital traffic management systems

The Director General of the Road Infrastructure and Territorial Development Company (SIRAT), Ranti Akindès, highlighted the importance of this initiative: “We have a program that will allow us, through connected devices, to manage and understand traffic flows and control circulation. It’s like the valves of the heart that regulate the flow of blood. Similarly, we will be able to interact with intersections so that they allow more or fewer vehicles to pass, spreading traffic more evenly over longer distances,”says Akindès.

With technology to minimise congestion and increase road safety, this solution fits the “smart mobility” model.

Benin has invested heavily in road infrastructure, although traffic management in large towns like Cotonou, Abomey-Calavi, and Porto-Novo remains difficult. The widespread use of motorcycles in Benin contributes to this issue, as many residents prefer personal transportation over public options.

Benin’s Integrate technology for efficient traffic solutions

In addition to Benin’s national efforts, there are also local initiatives to address traffic congestion. For instance, in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria, there have been proposals for mobile applications integrated with smart traffic management systems.

These apps would provide commuters with real-time traffic updates and alternative routes, helping to disperse traffic and reduce congestion. The solution would leverage advancements in IoT (Internet of Things) and innovative traffic management systems to monitor and control traffic flow in real time.

Benin’s push for digital transformation is not limited to traffic management. A recent report by the GSMA highlights the broader economic benefits of digitalisation, predicting that it could generate XOF 1.2 trillion in GDP by 2028 and create over 300,000 jobs.

In Benin, technology can boost economic growth and social progress across sectors. As the nation invests in digital technologies, its transport sector may benefit.
