Focus on Democracy and AI

The fellowship programme offers three tracks: academic fellows, journalist fellows and policy fellows. Successful applicants will work closely with mentors from the Digital Democracy Centre while contributing to research, public debate and outreach activities linked to digital democracy.

According to the organisers, projects connected to Denmark or Danish society will receive priority consideration. The 2027 call will also place attention on the centre’s Hybrid Warfare Initiative, which studies how societies can respond to new forms of conflict influenced by AI and digital technologies.

The programme encourages interdisciplinary work and seeks applicants capable of producing public-facing outputs, including policy briefs, educational materials, seminars and public talks. Fellows will also gain access to the centre’s research networks and collaborative environment.

Flexible Fellowship Structure

Organisers stated that the fellowship duration is flexible, with most placements running between two and six months, although longer arrangements may be approved in special cases. Fellows may combine remote work with in-person stays in Odense, Denmark, depending on the nature of the project and agreement with mentors.

Financial support is available through salary subsidies or stipends that cover travel, housing, and selected research expenses. Fellows are expected to participate actively in seminars, workshops and collaborative activities throughout the programme.

Applicants must secure confirmation from a mentor at the Digital Democracy Centre before submitting their proposal. The centre currently includes researchers working across communication, political science, law, AI, journalism and media studies.

Application Deadline Announced

Applications must be submitted in English and should include a project proposal, timeline, expected outputs, CV and budget overview. Organisers said proposals should clearly explain how the project connects with digital democracy and public engagement.

The application deadline is 1 September 2026, and successful candidates will be notified by 1 October 2026. The fellowship will begin at different points throughout 2027, depending on project arrangements and mentor availability.

Founded in 2021, the Digital Democracy Centre has become a growing hub for interdisciplinary research on AI, digital communication and democratic systems. Its partnership with TrygFonden continues to attract international scholars and professionals interested in understanding the societal impact of rapidly evolving technologies.
