On January 1, 2025, Egypt’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology introduced a digital tracking system that includes the “Telephony” mobile application. This system is designed to facilitate customs payments and the registration of imported phones.
The system monitors business imports to guarantee appropriate tax collection while permitting visitors to bring one personal mobile device into Egypt every three months without incurring penalties. The idea comes at a time when foreign phone manufacturers are setting up manufacturing plants in Egypt.
Through a single application that coordinates payment processing and customs documentation, the electronic system controls device registration.
The new restrictions are still not applicable to any mobile phones that were activated before January 2025.
These policies were created by the Finance Ministry to combat device smuggling and promote domestic production.
Only new imports coming into Egypt after the implementation date are targeted by the system.
