Applications for the 2026 and 2027 fellowship cycle are now open, with the next deadline set for 13 June 2026. Fellows may work remotely, spend time in Oxford, or combine both formats during the programme.

Focus on Ethical AI Challenges

The Accelerator Fellowship Programme was created to address pressing ethical questions surrounding artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. According to Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI, the initiative encourages “real-world impact” through research, partnerships, and policy-focused solutions.

Fellowship projects are grouped under four main themes. These include AI and Creativity, AI in Care and Healthcare, AI and Humanity, and AI Law and Policy. Applicants are expected to demonstrate how their work contributes to responsible and human-centred AI development.

The programme is open to professionals and academics from any discipline who are actively working on AI-related issues. Applicants must either hold a Master’s degree or show equivalent professional experience, including at least five years of relevant work.

Funding and Global Collaboration

Selected fellows receive a monthly stipend of £2,000 to support living, travel, and accommodation expenses during the fellowship. Some projects may also qualify for extra funding to organise seminars, exhibitions, workshops, or public events linked to their research activities.

The fellowship lasts either six or twelve months, depending on the project structure and applicant preference. Oxford says the programme encourages interdisciplinary cooperation and practical engagement rather than purely theoretical research.

Participants also gain access to Oxford’s research community, seminars, academic events, and professional networks connected to AI ethics and governance. The programme regularly brings together experts from government, technology firms, healthcare, law, and the arts.

Growing Interest in Responsible AI

Interest in AI governance and ethics fellowships has increased rapidly as governments and companies face mounting questions around regulation, transparency, misinformation, and the social impact of automated systems.

Oxford’s Institute for Ethics in AI says the fellowship seeks applicants who are committed to producing practical outcomes and encouraging responsible AI adoption across sectors. The university has positioned the programme as part of a wider international effort to shape AI development through ethical and philosophical inquiry.

Further details and application information are available through the University of Oxford’s Accelerator Fellowship Programme portal.
