The pilot aims to convert sensitive DNA and genomic information into encrypted digital records that can be verified without exposing a user’s underlying genetic data.
According to the project, the system combines blockchain infrastructure with zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) to enable healthcare institutions and laboratories to verify identities and medical records while preserving privacy.
DNA Protocol said the initiative is being conducted with certified laboratories in Uganda as part of broader efforts to explore blockchain-powered identity systems for healthcare and scientific research.
Why XRP Ledger?
The project is built on the XRP Ledger, the blockchain network associated with Ripple and the XRP cryptocurrency.
Supporters of the initiative say XRPL was selected for its low transaction fees, high processing speed, and energy-efficient infrastructure, features often touted as advantages for enterprise and institutional applications.
The development also aligns with Ripple’s broader push to position XRPL as more than a cross-border payments network. In recent years, the ecosystem has increasingly explored applications tied to digital identity, tokenisation, institutional verification, and decentralised science (DeSci).
Despite the announcement, XRP market sentiment has remained relatively weak, driven by declining liquidity and cautious investor positioning across the broader crypto market.
What are Ugandan authorities trying to achieve?
While Ugandan authorities have not publicly outlined the full long-term objectives of the pilot, the initiative appears tied to wider efforts to modernise healthcare data management and strengthen digital identity infrastructure.
By testing blockchain-backed genomic identity systems, Uganda could be exploring ways to reduce fraud in medical documentation, improve trust between laboratories and healthcare providers, and secure sensitive health records through cryptographic verification.
The use of XRPL may also support the need for low-cost and high-speed verification systems if such infrastructure were to scale nationally in the future.
Africa increases blockchain adoption
The pilot also reflects a broader trend across Africa, where governments, startups, and fintech firms are increasingly experimenting with blockchain applications outside cryptocurrency trading.
Several African countries have explored blockchain systems for identity management, payments, supply chain tracking, and public records.
In 2021, Nigeria launched its central bank digital currency, the eNaira, while also increasing broader discussions around blockchain adoption through agencies such as the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
In April 2025, as reported by Techpression, Ripple launched a drought relief pilot in Kenya using its Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin. The initiative, carried out in partnership with Mercy Corps Ventures and DIVA Donate, was designed to provide transparent and efficient financial assistance to pastoral communities affected by severe drought in Laikipia County.
Still, the initiative raises major privacy and regulatory questions. DNA and genomic information remain among the most sensitive categories of personal data, and any large-scale deployment would likely require strict oversight, consent frameworks, and strong data protection safeguards.
