The exercise was conducted on Thursday at the WAEC Training and Testing Centre in Ogba, Lagos, under the direction of Dr Amos Dangut, Head of WAEC’s Nigeria National Office.

Senior secondary school students participated in the trial to familiarise themselves with the forthcoming computer-based format, which combines objective and essay components.

Aims to close the technological divide

According to Dangut, the initiative’s goal is to gradually close the technological divide among schools nationwide while preparing students for full participation in digital exams.

Remember that in September, the council reiterated its intention to switch the WASSCE to a completely CBT format by 2026.

Before the deadline next year, it stated that the transition, which started with private candidates in 2024, has already made “significant progress” and will be expanded nationally.

Dangut informed the pupils that they were the first group to attempt a comprehensive computer-based exam that included essays and objectives.

Traditional format in areas without computer access

He went on to say that although some schools will offer both components online, those in places without access to computers will stick with the conventional essay format.

“Our goal is to create an inclusive system where every student can write conveniently, regardless of location,” Dangut said.

He promised that the new system would improve the exam’s accessibility and efficiency while guaranteeing uniformity and comfort for all applicants.

Dangut restated WAEC’s dedication to assisting students in achieving academic success while upholding the validity and integrity of its tests.

He exhorted students to embrace digital learning, characterising technology-driven exams as the educational future and a means of achieving global competitiveness.
