As a digital marketing professional, leader, and global strategist, her path exemplifies perseverance, adaptation, and dedication to cultivating success from within.
Composed, methodical, and well-centered, Titilayo characterizes herself as “purpose-driven, determined, and versatile,” an individual who wholeheartedly embraces continuous learning and personal development. Her trajectory, transitioning from cardiac physiology to digital marketing, and currently spearheading operations in a flourishing fintech enterprise, demonstrates that contemporary African women need not confine themselves to a single identity to achieve greatness. As Titilayo demonstrates, they can embody multiple roles and excel in each one.
In light of this, Techpression engaged in an enlightening dialogue with her, uncovering valuable insights about determination, purposefulness, and the digital landscape she’s actively shaping.
How do you balance family life and the hectic role of leadership in a Fintech Company?
I wouldn’t necessarily call it hectic. I’m fortunate to have an incredible team (shout-out to them!). Leadership is so much easier when you’re surrounded by brilliant minds, when you genuinely listen, encourage creative expression, and make trust the foundation of your work. I’ve been in leadership roles for a while now, so I’ve learned to strike a balance, and my number one rule is: never skip “me time.” Nurturing myself allows me to show up fully for my team, my family, and the work I’m passionate about.
How does Cedar Money support women and equality within the company?
Cedar is a great company, and I am grateful to experience such an encouraging work culture. Over here, women are trusted with real responsibility, empowered to take initiative, and given the space to grow, lead, and contribute meaningfully. There’s a consistent culture of fairness and support that ensures everyone — women included — has the opportunity to thrive.
How did you change your career from a Cardiac Physiologist/Sonographer to Digital Marketing?
That’s an interesting question. I’ve always believed that I can have and be it all. I don’t subscribe to the idea of limiting myself to one identity. If I want to be a doctor, lawyer, techpreneur, or anything else, I’m willing to do the work to become it. I’m grateful to have an incredible support system, so making that decision felt natural rather than scary. And honestly, it wasn’t a drastic switch for me. I was already working as a social media marketer while in medical school, so marketing has always been part of my life. In many ways, I didn’t “leave” something to become something else. I’ve always been a marketer, exploring different dynamics for myself along the way.
Why did you choose digital marketing out of all fields within the technology ecosystem?
Well, first of all, I really enjoy the internet. Some people go online to relax… I go online to observe why we’re all buying the same things we swore we didn’t need five minutes ago. I’ve always been fascinated by consumer behavior and how people respond to trends, storytelling, and hype. It’s like psychology, entertainment, and business all rolled into one.
But beyond the fun of watching humans be… humans, what truly pulled me in was the power of digital marketing. The idea that you can reach people across the world, without being limited to traditional channels, influence perception, build communities, and drive real business growth, all from a laptop? Amazing!
Digital marketing gives me the perfect blend of creativity and strategy. I get to think, create, connect, analyze, and innovate every single day. It lets me contribute to something bigger than myself while also constantly evolving (case in point, AI). And that’s the type of environment where I thrive.
So in summary: I chose digital marketing because it feels like both purpose and play, and I’m grateful every day that I get to do work that excites me and impacts others.
Many people fail to differentiate between digital marketing and traditional marketing. Can you explore the differences between the two fields further?
So, traditional and digital marketing share the same big goal: getting products and services in front of the right people by making as much noise as possible; however, they take two very different routes to get there.
Traditional marketing uses offline channels like TV, radio, billboards, flyers, newspapers, magazines, and word of mouth. It’s been around for decades, and it still works, especially for mass awareness. But once a billboard goes up or a TV ad airs, you can’t tweak it instantly, and it can be pretty expensive to measure how many people actually engaged with it.
Digital marketing, on the other hand, uses online channels and platforms such as social media, email, Google, websites, SEO, content marketing, influencers, and online ads. It’s dynamic, interactive, and data-driven. The most significant advantage is measurability: you don’t have to assume; you can track everything in real time with analytics tools. You can see who clicked, who bought, what worked, and what didn’t, and then adjust immediately.
With traditional marketing, the conversation is mostly one-directional – brands talk, consumers listen, with no direct/immediate feedback loop. With digital marketing, it becomes a two-way conversation: brands talk, consumers listen, and can contribute through replies, shares, likes, comments, reviews, complaints, praise, and engagement.
Both are powerful and still work to date; however, the most successful brands today actually blend the two strategically. Traditional marketing builds broad visibility, while digital marketing builds connection, community, and conversion.
What are the obstacles experienced by African businesses when it comes to digital marketing?
African businesses are incredibly innovative; however, two challenges come to mind immediately:
- Trust issues with online payments and E-commerce: Digital marketing might convince someone to buy, but getting them to pay online is a completely different battle. Many customers still don’t fully trust online transactions due to fraud concerns, failed payments, delayed deliveries, or negative past experiences. So even when a campaign drives interest, the final conversion can get blocked by fear or uncertainty.
- Limited budgets and unrealistic expectations: A lot of African and even global businesses expanding to Africa want digital marketing to work like magic: small budget, significant viral results, and instant sales. But digital marketing doesn’t work that way. It needs consistency, strategy, and investment over time. When budgets are too tight and expectations are sky-high, it becomes difficult to test, learn, optimize, and scale, which are the things that actually make campaigns successful. Marketing is a lot of trial and error. What worked last week might not work this week, lol, it can be challenging.
Thankfully, businesses that recognize these challenges early and invest intentionally in digital marketing teams are already standing out. There’s so much opportunity, and the brands tapping into it now are shaping the future.
As a digital marketer, can you outline 7 digital tools that are fundamental for success and their role?
Sure thing!
- Google Analytics or any analytics tool, for understanding what’s working (and what’s not). Analytics help you track website performance, user behavior, and conversion data so you can make informed decisions instead of guessing.
- Meta Business Suite (Facebook & Instagram), for managing ads, content, and audiences. This is where you run paid campaigns, schedule posts, view insights, and optimize your social media performance.
- Figma or Canva, for content design. Whether it’s social media posts, campaign graphics, pitch decks, or website visuals, these tools help you create professional and engaging designs quickly.
- Notion and Trello, to add structure and organization. Digital marketing involves many moving parts. These tools help with planning, documentation, team collaboration, and keeping projects on track.
- WordPress or Iterable, for email marketing and customer retention. Email is still one of the highest-converting channels. These platforms help you send newsletters, automate emails, and nurture your audience over time.
- Linear, for task and project management. It keeps workflows smooth by assigning tasks, tracking progress, and eliminating bottlenecks, so campaigns roll out efficiently.
- ChatGPT or Deepseek, for ideation, research, and productivity. AI has proven to help brainstorm faster, draft content, generate campaign ideas, conduct market research, and automate repetitive tasks so you can stay focused on strategy.
With the presence of AI, what impact is it having on digital marketing?
AI is the future, no doubt about that. And honestly, it’s already changing the game.
One significant impact is content creation. AI makes brainstorming, writing captions, and drafting emails so much faster. It’s like having a supercharged assistant who never sleeps, helping you get more done without sacrificing quality.
Another major shift is personalization at scale. AI helps brands tailor messages and recommendations for each customer. Instead of generic campaigns, people feel like the brand really gets them, which drives engagement and loyalty.
And lastly, smarter targeting. AI analyzes data to predict who’s likely to buy, when, and where. That means campaigns aren’t just shots in the dark; they’re informed, strategic, and way more effective.
At the end of the day, AI isn’t replacing marketers; it’s giving us more time to be creative, strategic, and human. Every marketer should embrace it.
Where do you see digital marketing both globally and within the African continent in the near future?
Globally, digital marketing will become more innovative, more personalized, and AI-driven, with automation and data guiding almost every decision. In Africa, it’s growing fast, thanks to mobile adoption, internet access, and e-commerce. Challenges remain, but innovative brands are finding creative ways to connect with audiences, making the continent an exciting space for digital growth.
