Applications for the latest funding round close on 31 May 2026, with the programme targeting early- and growth-stage enterprises tackling social and economic challenges through innovation.
Funding Push for Tanzanian Innovators
FUNGUO focuses on supporting youth-led and impact-driven businesses that often struggle to access investment despite showing strong growth potential. The programme operates within what experts describe as the “missing middle” of the startup ecosystem, where businesses have moved beyond the idea stage but still face barriers to finance and expansion.
The initiative is implemented by UNDP Tanzania in partnership with local enterprise support organisations and government agencies. Funding partners include the European Union, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and the Republic of Finland.
According to FUNGUO’s programme details, selected enterprises will receive non-equity catalytic grants, along with business development support, investment readiness training, mentorship, and networking opportunities with investors and ecosystem players.
Who Can Apply?
The call is open to legally registered Tanzanian startups and market-oriented social enterprises that are majority-owned by Tanzanian citizens. Eligible businesses must already have a minimum viable product, market traction, and a history of revenue generation.
Applicants must also demonstrate innovation in their products, services, processes, or business models. Priority will be given to ventures contributing to youth employment, gender inclusion, climate action, digital transformation, and sustainable livelihoods.
Programme organisers stated that applicants should not have raised more than 100,000 US dollars in debt or equity funding before applying. Ventures are also expected to meet environmental and social responsibility standards.
Building Tanzania’s Startup Ecosystem
FUNGUO was launched to strengthen Tanzania’s innovation economy and help scalable ventures contribute to national development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. The programme emerged as a successor to the former Human Development Innovation Fund initiative.
UNDP reports that the programme has already channelled billions of Tanzanian shillings into local enterprises, including women-led businesses and startups working in agriculture, technology, and sustainability sectors.
The latest funding cycle is expected to attract startups working across digital innovation, agricultural value chains, climate-focused solutions, and industrial development. Successful applicants are expected to be unveiled in July 2026 following a review and due diligence process.
